Upcoming Novel: HEARTS AND ERRORS, Chapter 6

Chapter 6: It’s Only Coffee, Right?

Why did I agree to meet him right now, or at all? Does he deserve to see me after what had happened between us?

Maybe it’s not about him deserving to see me, but more about him owing me an explanation.

Upcoming novel: HEARTS AND ERRORS, Chapter 4

CHAPTER 4: All Unpacked

After hours of carefully distributing my clothes all over my bedroom floor, I manage to pack absolutely nothing.

My pants are neatly folded on one side of the bed, my shoes are lined up on the floor, my toiletries organized, but my mind in complete disarray. Yes, I want to find love. But will going to Paris be the right decision?

Am I kidding myself about finding love in a café I’ve never been to because of an article I read in a doctor’s office?

Upcoming Novel: HEARTS AND ERRORS, Chapter 3

CHAPTER 3: A Matchmaker in Paris

“Hello?” she answers.
“Did I wake you?”
“I knew you’d call. I’m in the kitchen eating leftover pizza. Have you ever had cold pizza? It’s not bad,” she says.

“I’m going to Paris,” I blurt.

Inspiration

Sometimes all it takes is that one perfect song to get you going—to get you writing that short story, or that novel. Other times it takes a good long stroll, or maybe a vacation, or last night’s dream to inspire you to write. But as writers, we must write even when we aren’t inspired to. Even on days when we think we don’t have time to write—we make time to write…anything. A sentence, a paragraph, a page, or a chapter. Because it is from writing every day that we are able to start a story and finish it.

I came across this short, but inspiring clip of authors sharing some invaluable advice on writing. Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the video:

“Write a story for yourself.”
“Investigate on what your truths are and have faith in it.”
“Let the audience that’s meant to find it, find it.”
—Wally Lamb

“Write every day.”
—Diane Hammond

“When you have writer’s block—write. That’s how you unblock.”
“No book is written. Every book is re-written.”
—Ridley Pearson

“Read. The more you read, the better you write. Write. Keep writing because the more you write, the better you write.”
—Anthony Horowitz

“Trust yourself. Write exactly what you think you want to write.”
—Lee Child

“If all else fails, just keep trying.”
—Graeme Base

“There’s one thing that all writers have, that you have…your voice.”
—Dennis Lehane

“Write what you know. Write what you believe in.”
—Robert Crais

Writing Tip #2: Read Your Manuscript Out Loud

If you haven’t already, try reading your manuscript out loud. It’s amazing how words sound different when read out loud.

I usually read my manuscript out loud and edit as I go along, but you can also have someone else read it to you. Hearing your words will help you notice things you normally wouldn’t—good and bad. Take notes and really pay attention to word choice, dialogues, descriptions, plots, subplots, and pacing. It may also be easier to catch overused words.

Here’s another idea: Read it out loud and record your voice.
Staring at the same words over and over can strain your eyes, making it easier to miss things. Try reading a chapter out loud and record it. Now you can listen to it multiple times, while taking notes. Stay away from any distractions and sit quietly with your notepad and your headphones. Maybe even close your eyes. You may be surprised at what you’ll find.

Remember: Reading your manuscript out loud will also help you prepare for future book readings.

Day 64 – Sample Chapter…

I am forcing myself to write. Is that a bad thing? Some folks have been telling me to relax and not put too much pressure on myself since I’ve been through a lot lately, but I need to reach my goal. I feel if I listened to them, I would automatically fail. I don’t want to fail. I want to write because I have to and I want to. I just have trouble staying up. I’m surprised I’m still writing right now.

For those of you who follow my blog, I’ve decided to add a sample chapter from my first book. Hope you guys check it out.

I have to get back to work before the meds make me drowsy again.

Enjoy the weekend!

Day 20 – Writing projects…

I’m making progress. Slowly, but I’m making progress. So far, I’ve got 6 chapters. I wrote 2 chapters since I last blogged, which is better than nothing. I keep changing my mind about certain things, but I’m pushing myself to just keep writing. I find myself editing a lot. I can’t help it. It’s just the way I write. I can’t move on to the next chapter unless I know the other ones worked.

Aside from writing my second novel, I’ve also been working on a personal memoir/essay that I’d like to enter in a competition for Writers Digest. I’ve done a couple of drafts already. I just need to edit it. I’ve got a couple of weeks left before it’s due. That’s all for now…

Day 11 – Getting back to writing

Wow, it’s been 6 days since I last blogged. I would’ve preferred to keep writing but I had my radiosurgery last week. It was an interesting experience. And while the frame was being screwed on to my head (yeah, I’m not kidding), the only thing I could think of was writing my next chapter.

The next day, after my outpatient procedure, I got up at 6 am and went in front of my computer and started writing. I had to. It felt right.

I realized that writing isn’t just something I love to do. It is something I need to do.

Day 1b – Writing my next novel in 100 days…

Day 1 is about to end and I’m still trying to write as much as I can. Before it goes into day 2, I wanted to blog about what I have so far.

While making lunch today, I had all these thoughts about how I wanted the first chapter to begin. I didn’t jot anything down, so by the time I started writing, which was not until 6 pm, things were a bit scattered. I was able to squeeze in about 700 words right before dinner. I haven’t had a chance to edit anything yet, but I really need to. There are quite a few things I need to revisit.

Today felt a bit like rushed writing. Hope to squeeze in more time tomorrow so I can carefully craft the story.

Despite the mess, I’m glad I started writing.
